By Imran Afzal, CEO, National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC)
Every year, World Food Day reminds us why we do what we do — to build a food system that nourishes people and the planet, today and for generations to come. For me, it’s not just a date in the calendar; it’s a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the partnerships that make it possible.
At NAPIC, our mission is clear: to strengthen the UK’s position as a global leader in sustainable protein innovation. We’re working to accelerate new technologies, support collaboration across research and industry, and develop practical solutions that help feed the world more sustainably.
Alternative proteins have a vital role to play in achieving this. They offer a way to reduce pressure on natural resources, diversify our food supply, and create new opportunities for innovation and economic growth. But to succeed, it takes more than innovation – it takes connection, collaboration, and the courage to do things differently.
Since our launch, NAPIC has brought together researchers, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and investors under one shared purpose – to accelerate the UK’s transition toward more sustainable protein systems. In a short time, we’ve seen the power of collaboration in action: new partnerships forming across disciplines, knowledge shared between academia and industry, and a growing momentum to turn scientific discovery into real-world solutions.
Personally, what has inspired me most is the sense of shared ambition within our community. Whether through our research networks, workshops, conferences, or the signing of new Memorandum of Understanding – both within the UK and internationally, there’s a genuine commitment to building something bigger than any one organisation.
That’s why I’m so proud of what we’ve seen through our first round of Collaborative Programme Funding (CPF). The projects coming through span everything from early discovery to proof-of-concept and commercialisation. They bring together universities, SMEs, and industry partners from across the UK – working on challenges from crop productivity and ingredient functionality to consumer engagement and sustainability. The diversity, ambition and creativity in these proposals truly showcase the strength of our community.
To everyone involved in CPF Round 1 – congratulations. You’re laying the foundations for the UK’s next generation of sustainable protein innovation.
And to those who are just joining us – there’s much more to come. CPF II will open in early 2026, offering new opportunities to collaborate, explore bold ideas, and deliver real-world impact.
Our vision for the future is simple but powerful: a thriving, connected UK alternative protein ecosystem that’s recognised globally for its innovation, integrity, and impact. A community that doesn’t just imagine a better food system – but builds it.
So, on this World Food Day, I want to say thank you. Thank you to our researchers, our industry partners, our funders, and our growing community of innovators. Together, we’re not only transforming what’s on our plates – we’re helping to reshape the future of food.
